Those of you who have read this far I say " Thank You". No doubt you felt that there was nothing much to worry about after reading Lord Coe's letter on the previous page when he stated that the Olympic Delivery Partner " will ensure that the project is built on time and to budget " Coupled with Tessa Jowell's claim that a " close scrutiny " will be kept on Olympic costs London Council Tax payers could be excused for thinking that all their worries are over, but just hang on a minute.
Not long after Lord Coe's letter a story appeared in a National Daily Newspaper under the headline " MASSIVE BLOW TO LONDON OLYMPICS. The story concerned the resignation of the Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Agency, Jack Lemley, who was appointed last year on a four year contract. At the time of his resignation it was claimed that he wished to spend more time on the business of his Global Engineering Company however, once back in the USA he apparently gave a different version of events, which enraged the London Olympic Organisers. Mr Lemley was reported as saying that " the London projects seemed likely to come in late and cost more than expected because of political interference, and he did not want to damage his reputation for completing projects on time and within budget " (Wow - who would have guessed that ?)
Many of us are aware, from experience, that when someone who knows what they are talking about resigns there is an attempt to discredit them (bosses or politicians don't take kindly to whistleblowers) and sure enough, in this case, according to the newspaper report, up popped Derek Wyatt,MP, Chairman of the All Party Olympics Committee in Westminster (anyone heard of him ?) to claim that Mr Lemley was " out of his depth " whilst Dick Caborn, Sports Minister is reported as saying " I am very disappointed in what Jack is saying " - ( obviously the guy was expected to keep his mouth shut and not rock the boat !).
What should concern all Londoners is that the newspaper report also stated that Derek Wyatt MP agreed that building costs were likely to be far higher than original estimates (well us thick old Londoners would never have thought that, would we,) and to further support this Chairmanlike statement he is also reported as saying " just look at the legacy of Athens, Sydney, Atlanta and Barcelona, I think you will find the costs are double the estimates " (Thank you for spotting that Mr Chairman)).
So, do you still think that Londoners have nothing to worry about, as bit by bit we hear statements weeks and months after we said the same thing - but were told we were worrying about nothing.
We have Tessa Jowell saying " a close scrutiny " will be kept on the Olympic Budget - Seb Coe stating " the project will be built on time and to budget " - and then in an amazing outburst, which is the only way to describe it, we have the Chairman of the All Party Olympics Committee in Westminster, confirming that "building costs were likely to be far higher (not just higher but FAR higher) than original estimates " and then telling us to look at the costs of the Athens, Sydney, Atlanta and Barcelona Olympic Games when the costs were double the estimates. ( Wow - who, other than a politician, could have uncovered this ?)
If you haven't had any doubts about the Londoners Only Tax and Losses until now what will it take before you realise that at the end of the day Londoners will be more than "out of their depth " - they will " drown in a sea of Olympic debt ".
Can we now believe anything that we are told about how much it will cost Londoners - I think not !
Say " NO " to the Londoners Only Olympic Tax and Losses -
